Recruiting The Millennial What To Consider The millennial has received some negative connotations in the hiring world theyre demanding, self-righteous and expect everything at their fingertips. However, these stereotypes are not a true representation of the generation as a whole. Instead, their characteristics are more varied and are reshaping the workplace. When recruiting the millennial it is important their generalised characteristics, work style and motivations are understood and recognised. Recruiters and employers must tailor their recruitment strategy to attract this age group. In order to successfully retain and make good hires, who are happy within their role. Eager The millennial is motivated and eager to advance within their career. Their drive is credible and they seek roles where progression is available. Conventionally generation Y will be less likely to stay within a role where they feel there are no opportunities to advance. The millennial strives to develop their career and fast! Therefore when recruiting them it is important to ensure the potential company offers room for growth and can provide the candidate with opportunities to learn and advance. Adaptable Millennials are adaptable creatures research shows that nearly 85% of millennial workers aged between 18 and 35 stated they were willing to move to a new city for a job. This proves their willingness to travel for opportunities rather than only searching for a job in a small select radius. Therefore when considering a millennial candidate who lives in a different region to the job they are applying for its worth noting that they will be likely to relocate. Tech-savvy Millennials grew up in the digital revolution. They are tech-savvy and most use social media on a day-to day basis, whether its talking to friends, posting pictures online or looking for job opportunities they do it all! This is also something to consider when recruiting for a specific job role. Where the job is advertised and promoted is likely to affect the talent attracted. As the age group is relatively confident with technology, once they embark on a new role they can bring a fresh perspective to the companys online presence and social media channels. Work environment A millennial is likely to research a potential employer online and via their social channels prior to applying for a job. They want to get a sense of what its like inside the office and be able to envisage themselves working for that company. Therefore it is important to a millennial that a company offers transparency. Hiding or disclosing information about the potential company online can be off-putting for the job seeker. Through expressing the company culture through social channels, it is more likely to attract the millennial job seeker. Flexible Millennials want flexibility. The seek flexible working hours, a flexible workplace and an equal work-life balance. A company that can offer this is likely to attract the age group. This emerging work culture is currently changing the boardroom culture. There are an increasing number of companies implementing relaxed dress-codes, work styles and who also offer the chance of remote working to appeal to a potential candidate. Engaged The typical millennial leads a busy lifestyle, they live fast-paced lives and want things in an instant. Recognising this is essential in understanding how they will work within a potential new role. These possible traits if not recognised
